What Do Preppers Believe in and Why?

By Rob

January 24, 2022

What do preppers believe in is a question often discussed around the world.

Unfortunately, most people think that preppers have a terrible attitude towards the world and government.

However, not all people believe what they believe.

The truth is, preppers believe in taking every precaution they can to protect those who they care about, like family and friends.

If you are new to this space and do some research, you will find many different opinions on this subject.

Many highly knowledgeable people of different ethnic backgrounds and cultures would have a completely different understanding of preppers and survivalists in general.

I respect everybody's opinion, and I never pre-judge a person or their situation. Why?

Because unless I live in their shoes, I have no idea what kind of things they are dealing with in their own lives.

Okay, now that I got that off my chest, let's get to the good stuff.

What is a prepper?

A prepper is a term used to describe a type of individual or group of people who prepare for a "Pre-disaster" or an "Emergency."

These individuals use all their abilities to prepare for "Dooms Day."

what do preppers believe in (1)

They expect it to happen to themselves or to those they care about.

People in this group of preppers tend to have large amounts of...

  • Money
  • Food
  • Clothing
  • Weapons
  • Medical supplies

And other resources at their disposal because they expect disaster to strike at any time.

Now let's get back to reality. LOL, the above paragraph is the definition in the Dictionary/Google of what is a prepper.

Most of us preppers believe totally the opposite "well kind of".

We believe the emergency or crisis is just a natural part of life and must be ready for it.

This means that we will prepare for it by stocking up on supplies that will be needed.

We realize that there may be times when we will need to venture into a survival situation, and this is what our prepping is all about.

Prepping is not just about what you need to get you by in a disaster but also about what you are willing to do to prepare for a disaster.

Prepping will help you become more self-reliant and take control of your financial situation.

Obviously, this is just my opinion and what I believe in myself.

Other preppers believe in different things, and that's totally cool.

Everyone's got their own opinion and beliefs about preparing for natural disasters or an emergency.

Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with being prepared for an emergency or natural disaster.

You're not hurting anyone.

You're just getting ready and prepared for anything that may happen.

I think we can all agree that it's a reality now.

Just look at the last two years.

In today's post, I want to discuss what preppers believe in and what I think is most important about the prepping mindset.

What is a prepper's mindset?

Most preppers have a strong belief that we're all on our own.

Overall the mindset of a prepper is tough.

Preppers are strong and believe that a community cannot persevere without one another.

They also think that we must all look out for one another during a disaster or an emergency.

what are preppers

Most preppers realize that there is not much time to help when disaster strikes.

Preppers recognize that there is no real help to be found.

As preppers go, we believe that friends and family are their own biggest concern, not an outside entity like the government.

Preppers tend to push themselves beyond the point that others think safe.

They are always looking for ways to improve themselves and their situation.

I could go on and on about the mindset of a prepper.

But for the most part, there is still a lot of progress to be made. That's just how most of us think.

Survivalists, at times, tend to stress out about what will happen if things do not go in their favor.

Let me give you an example. There are times when the entire family might get thrown into a moment of shock.

The mood turns from calm and relaxed to panic and shock.

  • How would you react?
  • How would you handle a challenging situation?
  • Would you know how to respond?

Or would you lose control completely?

This is where the mindset of a prepper will come into play.

A prepper will be ready for anything and have a precise plan.

He or she knows that they must always be prepared for an emergency.

Are Preppers crazy?

This is one that I always get a kick out of when it comes to questions.

There is a perception that preppers are always paranoid and do not want to connect with others.

I've found that the opposite is true, especially when in survival. Preppers and survivalists tend to stick together.

what do preppers believe in (4)

The fact is most preppers are not crazy. Instead, they recognize the need to prepare for the unknown.

Preppers have a great deal of common sense.

I believe most preppers are rational when it comes to preparing for the worst.

In saying that, some preppers will exaggerate and take things a bit far sometimes lol.

Preppers and survivalists both have an aversion to government control.

Preppers and survivalists believe the government will do everything in its power to take what is ours, when and if it can.

Honestly, most groups of preppers are made up of people who like to know what is going on in their lives and how to handle it.

So my answer is no, we are not crazy, but there are crazies in all kinds of groups of people.

So, we all have a few nuts in the bowl, lol.

Prepper demographics

Now, this is a good one, and the numbers are all over the board, but here's my best guess.

I don't think there is an exact number, but there were around 5% preppers in the United States before the pandemic, and that number increased by the millions after 2020.

With the upward trend, this number should reach 10 to 15% or even higher at the end of 2022.

As of now, females have just about the same amount of preppers as males, but for an unknown reason, men seem to be more interested than women.

In 2016 31% of females were preppers, all changed big time in 2020, and as of now, it's about 50/50 men and women.

Here is a fun fact for you, preppers 10% make more income per year than the average person, but they set aside over 60% more savings for emergencies.

So, yeah, prepper demographics are interesting. I could go on and on when it comes to this, but I don't want to drag this out too long.

How old are preppers?

The average age of preppers ranges anywhere from 20 to 50 years old, but I don't think there is an exact number.

Some of the data that I found from a 2019 census report had the ages from 47.1 to 50.3 as the larger group.

With that being said it's tough to find accurate data on this, there are many different kinds of reports, and they all have different numbers.

how old are preppers

My own opinion is the numbers are not up to snuff because most preppers and survivalists don't like to answer questions from the Census Bureau, lol.

I know I don't.

However, overall the stats say preppers are primarily of older ages which could be interesting.

Preppers in the past were usually seen as hippies by mainstream society.

How long have preppers been around?

Preppers have been around as long as there's ever been electricity.

The survivalist movement started in the 1930s geared toward fighting government policies and being prepared for the economic collapse.

The prepper movement really got big in the 1950s with the start of the Cold War and the threat of nuclear war.

In the '50s is when fall-out shelters became a household topic.

This is when people started building bomb shelters in their backyards and storing food.

These shelters were high-tech for the time.

Some of them were like tiny houses but supplied with all kinds of survival gear.

Most modern-day preppers don't realize this happened, but it was a scary and unpredictable time in the US for most families.

I remember my parents and grandparents talking about this exact topic.

This is what got the balling for today's preppers and survivalists.

The only thing that has changed is the technology and what they are preparing for, for example.

  • Collapse of society
  • Natural Disaster (tornadoes, hurricanes, fires, earthquakes)
  • Terrorist attack
  • Disease outbreaks
  • Doomsday
  • EMPs (electromagnetic pulse)

That's to name a few. When you think about it, the last time we went into survival mode was Y2K.

That of course, is not including what just happened the previous two years (2020 and 2021).

Some final thoughts

When it comes down to what preppers believe in it's really simple.

They want to prepare in advance for bad days that will happen in the future.

Preppers aren't necessarily anti-government people; some preppers just want to be a lot more self-reliant in their day-to-day lives.

Preppers have a diverse variety of reasons for being a part of the movement.

Some want to be ready for the apocalypse. Others want to ensure they have enough food and supplies to last them a long time.
